If you have 12V devices you need to switch then you could either use a 12V supply with a 5V step down circuit for Pi power but as you say you are not comfortable with circuits and power you might be better off just using a RPi PSU for the board and buying a relay module to switch the solenoid with a sperate 12V PSU. There are always multiple ways to approach these problems. You can use a 12v supply and a 5v regulator to feed the pi. You can use 5V neopixels. You can use a waterproof panel mount for standard LEDs. Alternatively you can glue a transparent cover over standard LEDs; perspex, glass or polythene. I bought a pack of perspex offcuts.
