A diesel locomotive is a type of railway locomotive in which the power source is a diesel engine. Several types of diesel locomotives have been developed, differing mainly in the means by which mechanical power is conveyed to the driving wheels. The most common are diesel-electric locomotives and diesel-hydraulic.

Diesel family tree | Trains Magazine
The diesel locomotives family tree: switchers, light road-switchers, medium road-switchers, high-horsepower road-switchers, and cowl units. The torch lit by EMD''s FP45 and GE''s U30CG was passed on to later passenger locomotive models: the four-motor F40PH and F59PH. Although Amtrak has gotten rid of its F40s, VIA Rail Canada
1939''s big breakthrough: The FT
After a career of lugging freight on Southern Railway, No. 103 was donated in the early 1960s to the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis. The locomotive, "the diesel that did it," took a place of honor during this year''s "Streamliners at Spencer" festival, celebrating the sleek, smooth look of early American diesel locomotives.
Locomotive
Locomotive - Diesel, Traction, Engines: By the end of the 1960s, diesel had almost completely superseded steam as the standard railroad motive power on nonelectrified lines around the world. The change came first and most quickly in North America, where, during the 25 years 1935–60 (and especially in the period 1951–60), railroads in the United

By the mid 1950s, diesel and electric motive power began to share the spotlight with the steamer. With smooth sides and the opportunity to display colorful graphics
Diesel Locomotives | The Railway Technical Website | PRC Rail
Most diesel locomotives use electric transmission and are called "diesel-electric" locomotives. Mechanical and hydraulic transmissions are still used but are more common on multiple unit trains or lighter locomotives. Locomotives used to operate passenger trains are equipped with an auxiliary alternator. This provides AC power for lighting
B&O No. 51 | B&O Railroad Museum
In the 1930s, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (B&O) became one of the first railroads in the country to adopt diesel-electric locomotives for its passenger trains. The EMC TA Diesel – A Locomotive That Kind of Didn''t
The EMC TA diesel locomotive was an early passenger diesel and a Rock Island oddity. The Rock Island''s TAs appear at first glance like early E units, but they are shorter and ride on four-wheel trucks. Locomotive
Locomotive - Diesel, Electric, Hybrid: There are three broad classes of railroad equipment that use diesel engines as prime movers: 1. The light passenger railcar or rail bus (up to 200 horsepower), which usually is four-wheeled and has mechanical transmission. It may be designed to haul a light trailer car. Use of such vehicles is very limited. 2. The four-axle
